Winter can be a challenging time for trees, especially here in the PNW where cold temperatures, heavy rains, and occasional snow and ice are common. Although trees go dormant during the winter months, they still require some care to ensure they remain healthy and resilient. By taking a few simple steps, you can help protect your trees from winter stress and set them up to thrive in the spring.

Use Mulch for Insulation

One of the easiest and most effective ways to care for your trees in winter is by applying mulch around their bases. A layer of mulch acts as an insulating blanket, protecting the roots from extreme temperature fluctuations and helping to retain moisture in the soil. Spread a 3-4 inch layer of organic mulch, such as wood chips or leaves, around the base of the tree, but avoid piling it directly against the trunk. This will help keep the roots warm and prevent frost heaving, which can push the roots above the soil due to freeze-thaw cycles.

Water During Dry Spells

While the Pacific Northwest is known for its rain, winter months can sometimes bring dry spells, particularly if temperatures drop below freezing. It’s important to ensure that your trees are well-watered during these dry periods, especially young or newly planted trees. Water deeply before the ground freezes to help your trees stay hydrated throughout the winter. However, avoid over-watering, as soggy soil can suffocate the roots or lead to rot.

Protect Trees from Winter Storms

Winter storms can bring high winds, heavy snow, and ice, all of which can damage trees. To protect your trees from these hazards, inspect them for any weak, dead, or overextended branches that might break under the weight of snow or ice. Pruning these branches before winter sets in can reduce the risk of storm damage. For larger trees or those near structures, consider cabling and bracing to provide extra support during winter storms.

Winter may seem like a quiet time for trees, but they still need attention to stay healthy through the cold months. By mulching, watering during dry periods, and protecting trees from storm damage, you can help your trees withstand winter and emerge strong and ready for spring.
